Historical Context
Cyprus was under British rule from 1878, and became a British colony in 1925. However, among Cypriots, especially those of Greek descent, there was a growing desire for enosis - unification with Greece. This desire became the driving force behind the liberation movement. On 1 April 1955, an armed struggle began, led by the EOKA (Ethniki Organosi Kyprion Agoniston) organization. Its goal was to free Cyprus from British rule and achieve unification with Greece.
After four years of intense fighting and negotiations, the London Agreement of 1959 was signed, and Cyprus became an independent republic in 1960. However, the idea of enosis remained unrealized, leading to difficult relations between the Greek and Turkish communities on the island.

Official ceremonies: Held in the capital, Nicosia, and other cities, with government officials and military personnel participating.
Memorial events: Honoring the memory of those who died for independence.
